What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
Intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) is a level of care for people with addiction that is less intense than a partial hospitalization program (PHP) but more intensive than regular therapy. It’s a good option for those who don’t need constant supervision or detoxification but still need extra help maintaining sobriety [1].
In IOP, clients meet with treatment professionals for about 9 hours each week, usually on weekdays in the morning or evening [2]. The program usually lasts around 3 to 4 months before people move on to less intense care [3].
The great thing about IOP is that patients can live at home and continue with their daily lives while still getting treatment. This is helpful for people who have jobs, go to school, or take care of their families.
To participate in IOP, it’s important to have a safe and supportive home environment that is free from alcohol and drugs. Sometimes, people use IOP as a step-down program after finishing an inpatient treatment to help them transition back into society smoothly [4].

Exercise and Addiction Recovery
At Tree House Recovery, we incorporate exercise therapy as an integral part of our addiction treatment program in Denver. We recognize the profound benefits that exercise brings to the recovery process. Exercise is a powerful tool to support individuals in their journey towards overcoming addiction. Physical activity has been shown to enhance brain function, reduce stress, depression, anxiety and improve mood by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals [5].
Integrating exercise into our treatment approach provides a healthy tool for reducing stress and cravings. This also helps people redirect their energy toward positive and productive pursuits. Exercise also promotes better sleep, boosts self-esteem, and fosters a sense of accomplishment and empowerment, which are crucial for sustainable recovery. At Tree House Recovery, we firmly believe that incorporating exercise into addiction treatment not only supports physical well-being but also cultivates mental and emotional wellness, empowering individuals to achieve lasting sobriety.
